    I wanted to know who is Shin Se-kyung? What is her actually family background? I noticed her from the day 1, already starred with all those famous veteran A-list actors and popular young actors in many dramas as main actress but so far, I can’t see any improvement acting skills of her and sadly to say, she always ruined the show slowly to the end. Yes, she got beautiful looks but no emotion and stoic as hell. So far, she is the only Korean actress, I got to complaint. Always the supporter actresses win over her. I feel bad for her, I tried to convince myself to like her but I can’t cos’ in variety shows, she stands there like a wax sculpture and let everyone praised her in 2 days 1 night.     You are right. SSK’s expression is the same in all the dramas she is in. Her expression and acting are always and all the time the same for all the characters she played. Viewers feel as if they are in a loop watching the same drama again and again when they watch her dramas. So boring. Her acting is so flat. There are no dimensions to it.

    She should not feel offended when criticsed for her acting. It means that she should start paying attention on improving her acting skills and perhaps look to learn from some of the good and talented actors around her.

    I have watched this series till ep 3. Kim Rae Won makes me feel interested in this series and want to keep watching it till the end. His acting is wonderful.
    For Shin Se Kyung, her acting is better than her previous series but she cannot lead or support Kim Rae Won like Park Shin Hye did in series “Doctors”.     I was hoping for the same chemistry that was in Doctors, but not even close. The female lead always comes across as klutzy in her movements. He just seems to mature for her.     I watched the first 2 epi, but found the drama lacking a plot line that draws the viewer into the overal storyline – good premise but crappy script. Also found a lack of charisma between the two main.

    I fast forward the mid and restarted fully on 15 – still not grabbing at my soul!

    Kim Rae Won is eye candy, but not enough to keep me watching. His portrayal here is 2 dimensional – from “in love” to sadness – the story narrative does not give him a deeper road to highlight his acting skills.

    Best acting along with great viewer/character chemistry goes to –
    Seo Ji Hye as Sharon
    Jang Mi Hee as Jang Baek Hee

    They have a theatrical appeal to them that supports the fantasy feel of the show – which lacks compared to Goblin. That’s the problem – all future shows of this genre will be measured against goblin! Best show fantasy and supernatural wise atm is Korean Odyssey.

    The romance aspect is mundane with Kim Rae Won as Moon Soo Ho and Shin Se Kyung as Jung Hae Ra – she is not an actress with great depth – she looks good, soft, with a Vaseline camera trick feel – soft and fluffy – but that’s it! No charisma pass the prettiness!!

    Much has to do with the storyline and script writing.

    Success in s series is firstly a good plot/storyline, along with a great script and finally a stellar cast.

    Black Knight is kinda hit and miss. Love the premise of the story. It lacks in the characterization and script.

    A good example of all these features is in Hwayugi: A Korean Odyssey which has a stellar cast whose actors have been in many prior drama together. There is also special guest spots from actors in previous Hong sister productions. A cast with great charisma and chemistry-

I participate on another thread that discusses this drama and there is one rabid fan of SSK that takes any slight constructive criticism about this drama as a personal attack…rabid.

    However, I will say for me, the actors chemistry is not there–they don’t match; especially there acting style. KRW is more grown up and mature in his acting, SSK acts more like a naive teenager to me. They are supposed to be two people close to the same age, but they seem 20 years apart. He had much better chemistry with PSH in Doctors–their acting even match. In real life, both PSH and SSK are the same number of years younger than KRW, and yet only one of them could match his acting level. I believe that KRW is holding back to match SSK. I think at first he was acting to bring her up to his level, and when that didn’t work, he dropped down to hers. If you don’t believe, watch the first few episodes and notice how his acting changes after the “somewhat” passionate kiss that she really didn’t keep up with. After that kiss, seems like more “walls” came up between them.They are acting romantic, but it’s only surface level.

    The drama isn’t really making a lot of sense to me at this point and moving very slow. Currently, at ep 18, there is only 2 pages of comments here discussing this drama; compare that to Doctors who had 10 pages of comments by ep 18.

    I know some don’t look at ratings and they dismiss the opinion of “International” fans which is the biggest payday for these dramas, even the Korean ratings for this drama doesn’t come close to the ratings for Doctors–there has to be something that the Korean viewers are not liking about this drama; plot and lead chemistry would be my picks.

    tigerb @89, let’s be fair, the rating of “Black Knight” is not a flop. If you pull out the current dramas from this web site, not counting Sat and Sun family dramas, almost none of the dramas get to 10 point rating, “Black Knight” rating is average, not bad.
    I think enough viewers in Korea don’t mind SSK acting, she lead in many dramas and most of them got decent, if not good rating. Otherwise, she won’t have a job. No TV station will use actress that nobody watch.
    To me, Black Knight is going downhill after about 14 episodes. It was mainly the writer and director’s fault, the story is losing steam and getting weird. It is still above average drama in my opinion, the big surprise is Sharon. She is over the top crazy yet I can’t hate her, especially in modern day(Joseon Sharon was just mean). I am still looking forward to the final conclusion in ep. 19-20.

    I hounastly don’t know why people criticize shin se kyung. She has done great in this drama. The chemistry between the 2 lead is out of the world. They act very naturally together and it looks so real. It’s one of the best kdramas I watched. Certainly different than other dramas. And I don’t understand why people criticize shin other dramas too. Since she started, she was acting complex role either in historical or modern dramas. Her role as me do in when a man falls in love was great. She was able to portray the character of a girl who really wants be be well of and get money to help her family, yet she was not ready to marry a rich guy just to do that. Everybody hated the character and hence hated the actress. Same with fashion king she was great in playing the role of a young woman who lived a miserable life after losing her family, but was detriment to succeed, yet she sacrificed everything for the man she loved- her scholarship, life in the US, job offers etc… just to stand with her guy yet her performance was overlooked due to the bad ending that the writer choose. She is amazing and versatile actress who play really complecated role unlike many actress her age who play kids at school roles.

    It was the production team decision to add another extra 4 episodes to the drama. Hence, they are trying to create more events to lengthen the drama. It’s not the actress or the actor fault for that. The drama was originally meant to be 16 episodes. Adding extra 4 meant adding almost 1/4 extra events and acting to the drama. I think if they stayed with the original script, the story would have been more consistent. Adding these 4 episode created unnecessary additions to the drama and we cannot blame the actress or the actor for that. Both leads are doing really good in this drama taking into consideration that they had to do a lot more extra work for the added episodes. Also, the chemistry is really good between them.

    I don’t understand this hate that some have for shin se kyung. She is really a good actress. She is great in historical dramas and played her roles exceptionally well. Her modern dramas are not the usual school love dramas. She played complicated role in both fashion king and when a man falls in love. Really, both chrecters are very complicated and she was a perfect fit for them. If you don’t like a drama ending or character that does not mean you need to hate the actress. In the bride of the water god, she played the role of struggling physiology doctor really well, I did not like that drama because of the guy who played the lead actor. He was not a good fit for the role and was just too young. And the story itself was not very consist. I have studied literture, theater, creative writing for many years. I see that shin get these complicated roles that not anyone one wants to play. But she plays them really good. Black night, is an amazing story, and both leads have an amazing chemistry that you can see in their wedding episode. But, I wish the writer was better and more consistent to the story. Actually, the writing in the late stages what spoiled this drama not the actor or actress.

    SSK is a mix bag when it comes to her acting for me. Hated her in When A Man Loves–emotionally dead and one dimensional, her make out scene in the closet was horrific.. I didn’t see much improvement in some of her other dramas. I will say that I thought she was great is Six Flying Dragons–a role that required her to be serious which I think suits her better. I thought she was decent in Bride of the Water God–sadly I think we still have the character from BOTWG in this drama. Would be nice if she could switch it up and let herself relax.

I was fine with her acting and the lead male in Bride of the Water God…I thought he suited her acting style just fine. I read a post earlier and I think they hit it on the head with SSK and her acting; there is a depth that is missing from her acting. Most of the time she seems to be acting her scenes alone and not with the person in front of her. Yes she’s saying her lines, she’s exhibiting some facial expressions, but for me something is missing.

    I, like others, don’t see the chemistry in Black Knight. That is one couple that has no passion. They had one kiss that was very awkward to watch….glad no repeat. However, these actors are going through the motions, but there is a distance between them.

Her acting in he is beautiful, heartstrings, the heirs were terrible to me. I only watched he is beautiful to the end because I liked the 3 guys in the drama but skipt almost all her seens. Though, I don’t like her acting, I would say she improved in doctors. It seam people don’t allow their opinion to change about SSK. They don’t have to like her but some attack her really horribley just for no reason without allowing their opinion to change if they saw her improved. To me, she got some difficult roles. Most required her to act pasivally (I mean to not be really outgoing, crazy, screams when she wants etc..). Such passive acting is more difficult than happy or outgoing chrecters. In when I man falls in love, she was criticized for the kissing scene. But, I thought that the director meant it to be uncountable like that. How a girl suppose to act when she is staying with her bf/f and the guy she thinks she likes starts kissing her in bf house. It was the decision of the director to go that far about it and show it in this uncomfortable manners or s/he would have asked for it to be reapated untell they got the result the wanted. In black knight, I saw an expansional chemistry between SSK and KRW. Even on YouTube they are praised for their chemistry. In all the clips I watched, everyone commenting about their great chemistry. Please feel free to check it yourself. In all clips I watched and read comments for, I read only 2-3 negative comments about her acting from people who don’t like her from other dramas, while everyone else saying how great they are together. But in this tread she is really getting some bashing which I see as not fair for her as she have done many chrechter really well.

For me PSH fist came on my radar in Heartstrings (You’ve Fallen for Me); however, I can’t really claim to be a fan because I have only seen her in 5 dramas–I have not watched Heirs. I liked her natural looks and the fact that she could sing. Then I stumbled across Kimchee Radish Cubes….love her pose as a young actress holding her own against a list of seasoned actors. In Doctors, I see real maturity in her acting, not the (finally) adult kissing scenes, but in her interactions with a male lead and portrayal of her character…the action. I want to see more of this mature actress.

    Sorry, but in When a Man Loves, she was as stiff as they come. Love scene was bad, but every scene she was stiff, ‘clumsy’ looking (to borrow a phrase).

    Thought she did great in Six Flying Dragons because it didn’t require much of her emotionally. Her When A Man Loves acting, fit well in that drama.

    In regards to KRW and SSK…..no chemistry for me. They are trying to create it now. When they used to hug, she wouldn’t allow her face to touch his. He kisses her, I’m sure they will have a better kiss in the last 2 episodes, it’s not stiff as board, but they are children pecks; quick, no linger, no emotions, just an action to check off the list of things to do in a scene.

    I’m not saying she’s a bad actress, but I would like her to embodied her character… to act like a character who has lost her parents, found the love of her life, unsure of Sharon….she’s missing the subtle emotions that help deliver a scene. If you want to see subtle emotions–look at Sharon, Baek Hee actresses.

    For me, I just think this drama is missing something in the writing, plot, directing and acting.

The innocenence of their tuches and kisses looks so adorable and natural to me. Some like it some don’t. I personally like it a lot more that his paring with PSH in doctors.     What I have a problem with is that people personalize their opinion of actor or actress based on personal things not their acting. I feel that SSK get the worst of that since she was 20 and started the relationship with the singer who committed suicide recently. People had so much hate for her because of that relationship. Since then, every project she made get attack based on personal issues not her acting itself. Some went so far as to say recently after the singer suicide that if she stayed with him, he would have not killed himself!
    In when a man falls in love, the character of me do was different from female lead character in kdrama. They r usually portrayed as cute, loving, caring, money haters. Me do was not that. She loved money and when the guy asked her to marry for his money. She thought she could do it, but liked another guy she met and the conflict in her character started. I think any actress will have great difficulty making this role. Unfortunately, people hated me do and hated SSK because of that. I think this reflected on SSK acting because the drama was being broadcasted while it’s being made as with almost all Kdrama. I think the writer failed to show me do character while showing so much of ha te. We sympathized with him greatly, and forgot to put ourselves in me do place. A girl at 17 who had to see her family humiliated, offer herself as a payment to get her family of dept. I think this had a huge impact on her character. But people wanted her to love the guy. Me do was called really bad names everywhere on the internet and many said they hated the actress because of her role as me do. I think this reflected negatively on SSK acting at that time. I personally think she did the best she could for the character and don’t see any other actress would have made better given the character in question and how judgmental people who watch the drama were.
    In fashion king, I think she did really good. But her performance was out looked due to the bad end of the drama. In BOTWG, people accused SSK of trying to take the lead guy from his GF who acted with him in different drama. When they kissed in the drama people went crazy accusing her of trying to separate the guy from his GF, while she was just doing her job acting the drama.
    I appreciate that ur opinion s made based on your opinion of her acting and not like other people who have the hate for personal reasons.

    i did not expect that my comment in #89 would elicit so many responses, pros and cons of ssk’s acting and comparing psh’s acting relative to their lead roles with krw, the series itself, etc. etc. i find it interesting and i am learning from the posts above how viewers evaluate the actors in their previous roles. i have not watched the many dramas mentioned because after reading synopses of those dramas, i thought there was nothing new to watch. and i found that most of the actors i liked in previous roles could not deliver the same quality of acting in their following roles, specially the young actors. it’s like they were hired because they can bring money to the production, but not that they can deliver or do justice to a role. in fairness to them though, there are factors contributing to their inability to shine: script writing, direction, etc. i am not a fan of ssk nor of psh. pardon me or hate me, but i think both ladies need more grinding in their acting ability.

     So Ho is supposed to be mature smarter and a very successful businessman. Whereas Ha Ra is born rich and pamper but after losing her parents at a young age, she became penniless overnight and has to fence for herself. Imagine every month you need to think whether u have enough monies for living. She didn’t have a good education or friends (even her bf ditched her because she is poor, a orphan and not much education) and work in a travel agency as a “telephone operator”.

     If u are Ha Ra, you want to grab the opportunity for a career advancement even now u have a rich husband as life is unpredictable. After suffering all the setback from a young age at 14, you want to take charge of your own life and future than depend on your rich husband all the time.

     Ha Ra lacks confident and is young & innocent at heart and mind. Hence ssk acts the character well as some who has not much confident and think that So Ho is too good for her (Ha Ra dare not accept So Ho in the beginning).

     I am looking forward to the drama every week and just hope the two leads have more air time together for the last two episodes and a happy ending.

What I am really upset is the inconsistency in the writer. Sharon and Baek Hee got “punished” because they did bad things, the “punishment” is being immortal, stay young forever and even get super power (how can I sign up for that punishment?) At the end, when the “punishment” is ending, Sharon actually don’t want the “punishment” to end, so she should go and kill someone to keep her “punishment”? Soo Ho did nothing wrong but he received the exact same “punishment”, it make no sense at all. Whether immortal is a blessing or punishment, the writer need to make up her mind, she can’t have it both way in the same drama.

Even,Hera trying to find out how so hoo can become normal again but failed, and she tried to leave so hoo because she didin’t want that marriage life. So hoo always afraid hera leave him. So even hera unhappy he keeps begging hera not to leave him. The worst is he decided not to have children with Hera. How can its happily ever after? This not happy marriage at all.

     BK supporter @105 I totally agree with you. The chemistry between them was so natural and pure. I just loved them together. I hope they will work again together in the future. For me, it’s one of best chemistry I saw in Kdrama. And both leads did an amazing job playing their charecter.
     My only problem was with the writer. I think he created most of the confusion. He made it clear that becoming an immortal was a punishment, yet he decides at episodes 18 to make moon soo an immortal. It just did not make sense to me. I think he would have been more successful had he decided to end it happily and leave this waive if sad/strange ending for supernatural Kdrama. They were both humans since the start in this drama and that was for me a main attraction to watch it. I usually don’t like it when the lead is supernatural and he falls in love with a human. It was never a really good ending for such kdramas. But here, all the elements for happy ending where there especially that both leads were humans until ep 18. I think the writer was the main problem here.

There are scenes when they are sharing a booth together, but both of them are leaning away from each other; when they hugged each other, she wouldn’t let her face touch his–kept it at a distance, when they kissed (outside of the one that was award at best) it was pecks with them leaning in. This couple never really acted like an engaged, in love couple. They ended the drama the same way it began, when him appearing more of a care giver.

     I guess each person see chemistry in their own way, but this couple had zero passion, no real desperation during trying times, just a boring, boring, boring relationship. It was stupid how they revolved their lives around Sharon.

     For me, this drama was a disappointment.

For example, when he said the world seafood and she was able to come up with a concept for her work, when she went to his room and slept next to him in his bed, when they cooked together, when looked at each other eyes and understood what they wanted to say, the way he proposed to her etc..
     About the drama itself, I really loved the first half and thought it was going to be one of the best dramas I watched. It started with the meeting in Slovenia, then we started discovering something new each episode. They turned to be old friends/ lovers, then they turned to be the recarnation of thier older self of previous life, then we get to see what Sharon did to them ending by burning them alive for her to be punished like that, then we came to know why the older witch was punished and that’s because she actually switched he ra by Sharon at births. So, the main leads meant to actually be together in the first place. This story captivated me and made me wanting more. I simply loved the first half. After that, I think the writer struggled to keep up with the high bar she set in this drama and that disappointed me. But I cannot blame the actors for that, they work with the story. The writer should have made sure to keep up with the story she started. But after digging and knowing who she is. I’m not surprised. She set the bar high in other dramas and then just struggle to keep up. I personally think if the writer just kept captivating us as in the first part, this drama would have been great. She just could not. And as I said, I can’t belame the actors for that. I still think they were great together and hope to see them in further drama that is written well. This drama ended up being avarage to me because of the writer.
     Personally, I think it’s the story that make or break a drama, like the lady writer who wrote several well known dramas (disandants of the sun, Goblen, heirs, secret garden) though, I did not like all these dramas, but the writer was the main reason for the success of the dramas and for lunching the careers for many actors or raising them up though not all of them are really good actors.

     I like BBB.. Please can anyone tell me any of this writer’s drama, I need to be careful.

     Are the stories not checked before coming out? Can the writer explain things to us: what is the meaning of the ending of the story? What was the reason for the lead actors punishment? Why were they lovers in the first place if things will be like that? How did they leave happily forever? Thank you.

     Really it is a sad ending.😢 it makes me long for another season, because it feels like Leaving me with what ifs. But i like the twist of the story. What more can we expect in a fantasy romance. It not just an ordinary love story. Theres nothing wrong with the ending . Soo ho’s immortality makes sense because of boon yi’s wish. Since sharon stab him with a knife made up of boon yi’s ring where her wished was engrave. It is only sad because of soo ho’s immortality, he will live alone waiting for his love. But its his choice. And thats life we have to make choices whatever the consequences it may bring.

     I loved it, requires more thought and engagement than other dramas. Loved quirky dance macabre moments like assistant dancing while Sharon broods.

     As far as the ending, perfect fit in my eyes. You can’t escape dharma, and karma is a bitch to be reckoned with.
