For the first few years of their production, Gibson’s famous “Patent Applied For” humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with slightly different output and tone. They were – and remain today – as very desirable to players who want to mix and match and explore a complete spectrum of tonal possibilities. The ’57 Classic vintage style humbucker is the result of Gibson’s drive to capture and recreate this renowned characteristic. Introduced in 1990, the ’57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch. They are made to the exact same specs as the original PAFs, including Alnico II magnets, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and vintage-style, two-conductor braided wiring. The pickups are also wax potted to remove all internal air space and any chance of microphonic feedback.

I took for granted that the louder humbuckers were driving the amp harder than the single coil so there was some additional influence on the tone. I also love that fralin pickups are out of phase or polarity or whatever with other brands. The super thin sound when I combine the pickups is a whole new very usable sound production wise. Great pickup for a pushed PAF tone

These are really nice pickups. They are in the burst bucker style where the coils are offset. Burst bucker 1/2/3 have the coil side wound higher. The 61's have the slug side wound higher. With the Alnico V magnet they have a great bite and edge to them while retaining the charm, touch sensitivity and subtlety of PAF pickups. Think of them as PAF with a little more punch. They are modeled after what Gibson installed in post-1961 Les Pauls/SG guitars, where the coils were offset but much closer together in regards to the number of windings, and the most widespread use of Alnico V magnets. In the mid-1960's Gibson got the windings down much more precisely and they were generally evenly wound, with a shorter Alnico V magnet. Those are the vaulted 'T-Top' pickups. This Gibson '61 is the predecessor to those pickups. In my opinion, the 61's are great vintage style pickups that have a little more edge and bite to them, which, in an SG and in Rock music, is a plus. These are wax potted to help with microphonics.Specifically this pickup works just fine. Its in great condition and worked as expected. I like the Gibson quick connects and this pickup is 4-conductor for coil split/series/parallel etc. I bought this pickup specifically to swap the magnet out however. I installed an Alnico II magnet - this turns the pickup into a Gibson '59 Tribute. Same pickup with a different magnet. In my application it works out better and I really dig the sound. Much more bright and single-coil sounding even compared to regular Burstbuckers. Read full review
