Morrigan is a Witch of the Wilds, one of innumerable sorceresses whose legends originate in the Korcari Wilds. She is called upon to leave her home to become a companion to The Warden. Morrigan can be romanced by a male Warden, and can also teach the Shapeshifter specialization.
InvolvementEdit
Dragon Age: OriginsEdit
Morrigan first encountered The Warden in the Korcari Wilds, following them in animal form and later leading them to Flemeth, who held ancient Grey Warden documents necessary for the completion of their Joining. Following the Battle of Ostagar, Morrigan and her mother nursed the Warden and their companion Alistair back to health, later accompanying them on their quest at Flemeth's behest.
After being given Flemeth's Black Grimoire as a gift, she claims that her mother plans to possess her body in order to prolong her own life. To prevent this, Morrigan asked the Warden to slay Flemeth. If the Warden retrieves the grimoire, Morrigan's approval will increase significantly.
On the eve of Battle of Denerim, after the Warden learned that a Grey Warden must die in order to defeat the Archdemon, Morrigan offered an alternative. If she can conceive a child with a Grey Warden, the essence of the Archdemon will be lured into the unborn child (bearing the Taint) rather than the Grey Warden who strikes the killing blow.
For Dragon Age: Origins on the Xbox 360, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'For Those Who Want To Romance Morrigan.MAJOR SPOILERS.'. F you're looking for the best romance for story reasons then it's Morrigan or Alistair. My personal favorite for the game is Zevran, followed closely by Alistair; I've never romanced Morrigan or Leliana so I can't say anything about them but people tend to like their romances just fine.
Witch HuntEdit
Two years after the Battle of Denerim, Morrigan was spotted in Ferelden, prompting the Warden-Commander to seek her out. After a series of adventures, the Warden-Commander cornered Morrigan in the Dragonbone Wastes, as she was about to step through a magical portal. She claims that great change is coming to the world and it is necessary for her to leave Ferelden to prepare for this change. After giving a final warning about Flemeth, Morrigan leaves behind a mysterious gift for the Warden-Commander: 'something they will find of great interest.'
Dragon Age: InquisitionEdit
Morrigan currently serves as an advisor to Empress Celene I, arriving in the Orlesian court in 9:37 Dragon. She quickly insinuated herself into the court, gaining the favor of the empress who had long sought a source of magical knowledge untouched by religious dogma. However, rumors abound that Morrigan is a sinister influence on the throne, teaching the empress forbidden, dark arts.
Morrigan appears at a ball held at the Winter Palace. She meets with The Inquisitor, informing them that she had fought and killed a Tevinter agent and retrieved a key from the body. It is in her best interest to see Celene spared from the Venatori, for if she is killed, then the Imperial Court may accuse Morrigan. As she can't leave Celene unattended, she leaves the Inquisitor to find the assassin.
Following the cementing of Orlais' alliance with the Inquisition, Morrigan informs the Inquisitor that she had been assigned as liaison to the Inquisition.
As the Inquisition had foiled many of Corypheus' plots, the magister had withdrawn his forces to the Arbor Wilds. Morrigan privately explains Corypheus' goal, as she brings out an eluvian and brings the Inquisitor to a dimension she dubs the Crossroads. She explains that Corypheus seeks an eluvian to enter the Fade and through it the Black City.
If the Dark Ritual had been performed or the Warden romanced Morrigan, Morrigan introduces her son, Kieran, to the Inquisitor.
When the Inquisition marches on the Arbor Wilds, Morrigan joins the Inquisitor as they follow Corypheus to the Temple of Mythal. After witnessing the darkspawn disintegrate, only to be reborn in the body of a Grey Warden, they flee inside the temple. Morrigan theorizes that Corypheus possesses similar abilities as an archdemon. Also having heard that Corypheus seeks the Well of Sorrows, it makes Morrigan wonder if the eluvian was truly his goal.
Venturing into the temple, the group encounters ancient elven guardians. If the Inquisitor performs the rituals required to enter the inner sanctum and not take the shortcut like Samson/Calpernia, they encounter the guardians' leader, Abelas. Regardless of whether the Inquisitor chooses to ally with Abelas or not, the elf leaves to destroy the Well before it can be desecrated, compelling Morrigan to transform into a bird and follow him.
She manages to reach the well before Abelas. Held at an impasse, Abelas reveals that the Well contains the collective knowledge of all previous servants of Mythal and he fears it would be lost if an outsider drinks from it. If the Inquisitor had allied with him earlier, Abelas can be convinced to leave, other wise Morrigan will kill him before he could destroy the temple, but not before warning that drinking from the Well binds the person to the will of Mythal forever. Either the Inquisitor or Morrigan drinks from the Well, before escaping through the eluvian back to Skyhold.

If Morrigan's Ritual was performed, Kieran will enter Morrigan's eluvian into the Fade and Morrigan chases after him. Joined by the Inquisitor, they find Kieran with Flemeth. When Morrigan attempts to attack, Flemeth magically commands who drunk from the Well to make her stop, revealing herself as a vessel of Mythal. She then offers a deal: Flemeth keeps Kieran and Morrigan is freed from her, otherwise she'll keep hunting her. Morrigan refuses her offer, willing to even sacrifice her body to her mother to spare her son. With that, Flemeth only takes the Old God essence of Urthemiel from Kieran. She then tells Morrigan that she could never possess an unwilling host before departing.
If Morrigan's Ritual wasn't performed, then the Inquisitor and Morrigan go to the Altar of Mythal and encounter Flemeth.
If Morrigan had drank from the Well, she gains the ability to shapeshift into a dragon and battles with Corypheus' dragon. In the middle of the battle, she ends up defeated and thus is knocked out cold for the remainder of the fight.
In the aftermath of Corypheus' defeat, Morrigan departs Skyhold for parts unknown.
RomanceEdit
Dragon Age: OriginsEdit
Morrigan's responses to a romancing Warden when she is chosen in the field or approached for dialogue are initially bored or sarcastic, but will (as with others) evolve with advancing Approval and breadth of topic, becoming flirtatious, sultry and (in 'extreme' cases) even girlish. When engaging her in conversation, it is important to remember that she values independence and power above all.
For successful advances it is best to agree with her 'survival of the fittest' philosophy; she disdains any display of soft-heartedness. (That being said, if the Warden plays the 'contemptuous of love' card too strongly, he may spoil his chances of intimacy with her.) She also appreciates open-minded curiosity regarding her apostate status and 'uncivilized' upbringing.
If the Warden initiates romance with Morrigan, then similarly pursues Leliana and/or Zevran, she will eventually confront the Warden and force him to choose - and the rival(s) can force an ultimatum in the same context.
A '[Kiss her]' option can be unlocked at a lower Approval value than with any other potential paramour (minimum Approves (+20) and either 'Interested' or with a successfully-resolved 'good side' dialogue). If this 'first kiss' occurs in the presence of Alistair, he may chide Morrigan (in banter) about making 'kissy faces'; subsequently, public kisses in Alistair's company prompt a 'projectile vomit' remark.
Before even reaching Lothering, it is possible to raise Morrigan's Approval enough to elicit a sexual proposition (Approves (+51) and 'Interested'); however, maintaining or further developing this may be more challenging. Morrigan disapproves of generosity, sentimentality, and cooperation with the Chantry (thus she tends to withdraw Approval whenever Alistair, Leliana and/or Wynne would grant it). Also keep in mind that if Approval exceeds 85 before romance is attempted, such an opportunity will cease to be available.
At the first conversation following a Romantic Approval raised above Approves (+70) , this Witch of the Wilds will offer the Warden a unique ring. This is designed as a psychic link between the two, and Approval may be increased further in this conversation if the Warden not only accepts it, but carefully reciprocates concern and avoids mocking what one might interpret as Morrigan becoming sentimental. This also plays a significant role in the Witch Hunt DLC.
After acquiring Flemeth's Real Grimoire, a 'romantically advanced' Morrigan (Approval label 'Love') will come to fear the intensity of her affection towards the Warden, prompting a conversation about these feelings. Most of the choices in this dialogue will result in the end of the romance and a significant loss of Approval, but these can both be avoided (or she can be sent away entirely); however, even if she stays in the party and in love, she will no longer accept 'tent invitations'.
If the Warden beds Morrigan at camp but refuses her offer at Redcliffe Castle, the epilogue will state that she is expecting a child even though the ritual was never performed. This isn't a bug of any sort, merely a variant. It is hinted that she unexpectedly conceived a child before the eve of the Final Battle.
If the Warden breaks up with Morrigan when she asks it, she will call the Warden 'my love' (even if Approval is Friendly) at the Denerim gate, and the 'regret and sorrow' epilogue may be shown (even if the Warden concludes Origins with another romance (Leliana or Zevran) active). One glitch has been observed: even if the ring is sold or thrown away, the 'ring epilogue' may still appear.
From the standard Morrigan-romance-active epilogue: 'there came a night when he was sure that she was thinking of him.. somewhere. She felt regret, and sorrow. But the ring told no more.' There seems to be no 'happily-ever-after' with Morrigan. She will leave the group immediately after the Final Battle, regardless of relationship status.
Witch HuntEdit
However, the romance can continue and end on a happier note (dependent on choices in Origins and Witch Hunt) wherein the couple kiss and leave Thedas together.

Characters in Dragon Age Inquisition may engage in romantic relationships with companions, advisors, and other characters they encounter in the world.
IGN wants to know just which of Dragon Age's eight romances appealed to you the most. Answer the poll, then check below for guides to romancing every eligible character in the world of Inquisition. And if you just want to skip ahead, watch the video above that collects all eight of the steamiest scenes into one super-cut.
Romance is more nuanced in Dragon Age: Inquisition compared to previous Dragon Age iterations and other franchises from Bioware. Our Romance Walkthrough below will help you close the deal, but you have to work a bit to convince your potential suitor that you are worth their time.
For lack of better terms, there are serious and casual romances in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Casual romances are suited to minor characters, perhaps even one-night stands for NPCs in special circumstances in quests. At the most basic level, as the player-character, you can initiate flirtatious dialogue with many non-player-characters, including subjects your character cannot actually romance. All flirty romantic interactions are designated with a heart icon on the dialogue wheel.
Few NPCs will ever initiate; usually you'll need to be the one to initiate, else the subject will assume your relationship is platonic at best. However, just because you flirt doesn't mean the subject will respond favorably. All NPCs have their own preferences on partners they want, if any. Some NPCs, especially non-party members, may react favorably in specific quests, and initiating a one-night stand may resolve quests in special ways. In other situations, flirting will actually be counterproductive; early flirting with Cassandra, for example, tends to lower her approval rating because she thinks you're not taking her ideals seriously.
Serious relationships (that is, relationships with long-term game consequences that may affect the endings) are limited to eight characters. Each of those eight have specific gender and/or race preferences that you cannot overrule, though you can usually flirt with them even if they won't want to take things to the next level. The chart below lists the eight possible relationships, their gender preferences (i.e., what your character needs to be to romance them), and whether they use the approval system. More details on their personalities can be found below.
Suitor | Preference | Approval System
Cassandra | Any Male | Yes | |
Blackwall | Any Female | Yes
Josephine | Any | No | |
Iron Bull | Any | Yes | |
Sera | Any Female | Yes | |
Dorian | Any Male | Yes | |
Cullen | Human Female or Elven Female | No
Solas | Elven Female | Yes |
Note this means that elven females have six potential suitors, human females have five potential suitors, and every other combination of race and gender has four potential suitors.
The Approval System[edit]
Your major companions (the ones you can choose for your party) have approval numbers based on your actions and dialogue choices. Unlike previous iterations of the franchise, these numbers are hidden from you. There is no simple visual indicator to gauge their friendship level with you, though you can usually get an idea based on how they speak to you. Romance is only available if you maintain high approval with your chosen suitor. Dialogue, quest availability, and even endings are affected by approval ratings regardless of whether an NPC is a suitor or not, so you'll probably want to keep those approval ratings nice and high with all your party members. (Of course, if you're role-playing or trying to craft a particular tale, all bets are off!)
Note that Josephine and Cullen are not subject to the approval ratings. You will still need to initiate romantic dialogue to show that you are interested in them (and in Cullen's case, your character will need to be a human or elven female as well). However, because they are not subject to approval ratings, they can be easily romanced regardless of what decisions you have made throughout the game.
Lead Scout Harding[edit]
Lead Scout Harding is the only minor character who has a long-term casual romantic option. Assuming you use flirtatious dialogue options every time you speak to her, Harding will flirt back and even comment on where your relationship is heading once you acquire Skyhold.
However, romancing her does not provide any specific rewards or steamy cut scenes, nor does she have any personal quests to undertake. For all romantic purposes, she is a minor character who is not subject to the approval system.
Multiple Romances[edit]
As the player, you can attempt to role-play a polyamorous character to an extent, but none of the NPCs will reciprocate. You can flirt with as many characters as you wish (subject to their preferences), but as you complete storyline milestones, multiple suitors may confront you and ask you to make a choice.
This is most apparent just before The Final Piece storyline quest. Even if you only have one suitor, that character will usually confront you and demand to know what your intentions are. If you state that you want to be with that person, you are locked into that romance for the rest of the game.
Prior to any heavy choices like that, you can always break off a romance by speaking to your suitor in Skyhold. You must do this if you wish to pursue a serious romance with a different suitor. Just know that if you ever break off a romance, you will not be able to romance that character again for that playthrough.
It is possible to view multiple sex scenes in the same playthrough, but some characters are less inclined to take the relationship to that level too early.
The following section includes in depth guides and tips to romancing the character of your choice. Note that each character has their own gender and race preference, and successfully romancing a character will depend on multiple factors.
Cassandra
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Female | Males, Any | Believes in the Herald of Andraste, supports The Chantry | Promise of Destruction, Unfinished Business, Guilty Pleasures, The Ideal Romance |
Cassandra Pentaghast is the Chantry's Seeker and proclaimed 'Right Hand' of the Divine. After the death of Divine, Cassandra becomes one the Inquisitor's first companions at the start of the game. As expected, Cassandra is a very pious and driven individual, and seeks justice above everything else. Players looking to romance Cassandra must appeal to her faith in the Divine, accept that they are the Herald of Andraste, and support the Chantry (as well as prioritizing the Inquisition over personal fame).
After building up approval by doing Inner Circle quests like Unfinished Business and Promise of Destruction, be sure to get her a gift by doing the Guilt Pleasures quest. When Cassandra confides that she's not sure she can fall in love with the Herald of Andraste, complete The Ideal Romance quest and you can begin a romantic relationship with her.
Blackwall
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Male | Females, Any | Helping others, second chances, trust | The Lone Warden, Memories of the Grey, Explanations, Revelations |
Blackwall is one of the few remaining Grey Wardens and a companion to the Inquisitor in the game. Having lived most of his life in isolation, he is not used to being the company of others, but is very committed to his role as a Grey Warden.
Be sure to keep a high approval with Blackwall by being fair and just, taking time to help out the less fortunate and showing mercy towards people who have done wrong. You can flirt with Blackwall early on but he may pull back when things get serious. Keep doing his personal quests like Memories of the Grey, and he will offer to take you to Storm Coast for another personal quest, Explanations. After this, he will leave Skyhold - and the party - which triggers his last mission, Revelations. Follow him to Val Royeaux and resolve the quest by letting him join the Grey Wardens or telling him he is free to do as he pleases. Back in the Inquisition, you can speak to him to finalize your romantic interests.
Josephine
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Female | Males and Females, Any | Peacemaker, supports fairness and diplomacy | Of Somewhat Fallen Fortune, Heraldry From a Herald, An Unexpected Engagement |
Josephine Montilyet is an ambassador and chief diplomat of the Inquisition, and while she does not join the Inquisitor as a companion, she can be romanced nonetheless. Players looking to romance Josephine will meet her just after the opening act of the game, when the Inquisition is formed. Due to her status as a diplomat, great care must be taken in discussing politics with her, as she struggles to form new alliances and unite everyone under one banner.
Talk to Josephine in Haven or Skyhold, and when romance options come up, take them. When you get to a point where Josephine will tell you Leliana wanted to speak with you, seek her out and speak with Leliana, and make sure the topic of you and Josephine comes up. She'll ask you about your romantic intentions toward Josephine, so tell the truth. Return to Josephine after, and that will trigger the conversations where you can choose to start the romance.
You will now see a few new conversation options with Josephine. Taking them and coming back to speak with her advances the plot of the romance.
Iron Bull
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Male | Males and Females, Any | Loves a good fight, easily impressed | The Captain of the Chargers, Demands of the Qun, Tough Love |
The Iron Bull is a Qunari mercenary who joins the Inquisition as a companion. His appearance is quite striking due to his one eye, and he is also an agent of the Ben-Hassrath, and relays information to both them and the Inquisition. The Iron Bull is somewhat of an odd character, as his life's indulgences are in violation to the Qun, which the Iron Bull still professes his loyalty to.
The Iron Bull may not seem that receptive to flirtation, but don't worry. After you complete his first personal quest, Demands of the Qun, he will show up later if you have flirted with him during previous conversations. If you confirm you romantic intentions with him, the Iron Bull will discuss the rules of your engagement, and later on, the ramifications. If you are still interested, the Iron Bull will tell you about a special Qunari Item that launches his final quest, Tough Love. Complete the quest and give him the item, and you will be given the opporunity to go public with your feelings for him.
Sera
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Female | Females, Any | Carefree, loves humor and the downtrodden | A Friend of Red Jenny, The Verchiel March, A Woman Who Wants for Nothing |
Sera is an eleven archer who meets the Inquisitor in Orlais and becomes a companion member. Sera is very impulsive for an elf, and often takes actions 'for the greater good' and behaves somewhat erratically.
Sera tends to be atheistic, cynical, and in favor of strong justice against enemies. She tends to favor you if you make more lethal choices against those who have wronged you, and if you reject the notion that you are Andraste's Herald. She is a prankster to her friends however, and in Skyhold, you will suggest that you prank your lieutenants to increase morale and loosen up your character (though this is not a proper quest). Have a good sense of humor around her, and favor the 'little people' when making decisions.
Those looking to romance Sera should know that you'll never really be able to bring Sera to your level - she does things on her own terms and nobody elses. This can lead to confusing conversations, but have patience and do her personal quests to gain approval. You can also check out her codex for added info over time, as well as a journal she keeps in the Skyhold Tavern. Be warned that Sera will not accept what happens in Mythal. If you should be determined to believe in what transpired, your romance with Sera will end.
Dorian
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Male | Males, Any | Sarcastic, dislikes stereotypes | One Less Venatori, Last Resort of Good Men, The Magister's Birthright |
Dorian is a human mage of the Tevinter Imperium, and joins the Inquisition as a companion member. While he was born into a very prestigious family and demonstrates an adept skill for magic, Dorian became a pariah after becoming disillusioned with the Tevinter, and now stands for everything his homeland opposes. Despite this, Dorian takes great pride in himself, and seeks to make a difference in the world.
Dorian is sharp tongued and quick witted. He likes people who can keep up with his sarcasm and cycicism. Being from Tevinter, he hates the stereotypes people have about that. That said, he views Tevinter extremists angrily because they paint a negative picture of his home. He acknowledges and understands that his people have had a large part in causing the chaos Thedas has suffered.
To initiate romantic relations with Dorian, be sure to do his first personal quest, Last Resort of Good Men. After this point, Leliana will approach you with his final quest, The Magister's Birthright. You need to be careful, as killing Ponchard will end both the quest - and your relationship with Dorian.
Cullen
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Male | Females, Human and Elven | Devoted to the Templars, dislikes Lyrium | Perseverance, Happier Times, Before the Dawn |
Cullen is a Templar Commander who joins the Inquisition after the opening quest in the game as an advisor to the Inquisitor, though he does not join as a companion. Cullen differs from most other romanceable characters in that he is only interested in Human and Elf females.
Dragon Age Origins Morrigan Romance Dialogue
If you meet the requirements, you can initiate a romantic relationship with Cullen by taking every opportunity to flirt with Cullen during conversations. Be sure that you're not currently in a relationship with someone else. If you want to pursue Cullen, call off any other relationships first.
Lyrium is a very sensitive subject for Cullen, with his Templar background. If you want to keep the possibility of romance open for Cullen, never order Cullen to take lyrium when you find it during the game. If you press him on taking Lyrium, you risk the chance he will either call off the romance, or if you haven't yet romanced him, will be unable to pursue him.
Morrigan Approval Guide
Solas
[edit]
Gender | Romanceable By (Gender, Race) | Political and Ideological Views | Personal Quest |
Male | Females, Elven | Very thoughtful, Doesn't see things in black and white | Measuring the Veil, All New, Faded for Her, What Lies Dormant |
Solas is an elven apostate, and joins the Inquisitor fairly early on in the game as a companion. Solas is an incredibly talented mage, with an expertise on the Fade, and is able to figure out how the Inquisitor can utilize the mark on their arm to destroy the rifts opening across the land. Those looking to romance Solas should know that he has very specific interests, and can only be romanced by female elves.
Female elves wishing to romance Solas should flirty with him at every opportunity, and impress him by always seeking more information on subjects and seeing things as he see's them - in shades of grey, not in black and white. When Solas gives you a personal quest, All New, Faded For Her, you can free a spirit without killing it in combat - which Solas will approve of. If you are unable to free it - or kill it, and don't apologize, you may risk cutting things off with Solas for good.
Flirting With Non Romanceable Characters
[edit]
There are several options to flirt with characters who may or may not be romancable, as indicated by a heart icon. These options are mainly for player characters who consider themselves flirtatious, but should not be misled that any romance can come of these encounters. Such characters include:
- Lead Scout Harding
- Leliana
- Morrigan
- Uninterested companions, such as flirting with Dorian as a female
